16/02/2012 - Railways in Indonesia

On the 16th of februari Engineers Without Borders Holland organised a lecture on railways in Indonesia. It focussed on the work that the Dutch national railway corporation did together with its Indonesian counterpart in the period 1976-2000. Misters Hans Kartman and Henk Bovenlander gave an account of their experience working on rail in Indonesia. Participants of the lecture also added their practical experience in Indonesia to the discussion which made it an interesting lecture. Especially the upcoming rail projects in Indonesia and the influence of Japanese companies gave an interesting debate.

8/10/2011 - Symposium: Business As Development

On Saturday the 8th of October 2011 Engineers Without Borders Holland organised a symposium with the title "Business As Development". It focussed on how engineers can start, or have started, sustainable businesses that will contribute to the (economic) growth of developing countries. About 100 participants attended the symposium which took place in the superb tram museum of the city of the Hague.

The symposium was opened by former Dutch minister of defense, Professor dr. ir. Joris Voorhoeve . After that 12 parallel sessions researched various technical fields, sectors and countries. The sessions were so interesting that participants complained that they could not choose which sessions they wanted to attend. It was a very positive day which inspired many. A conclusion is that we will try to organise a follow-up symposium in 2012.
